Archaeologists say there have been more exciting discoveries at St Mary’s Church in Kilkenny City.
Last month the skeletons of a number of young girls dating from the 13th century were uncovered during the dig there – attracting huge public attention.
Now, archaeologist Cóilín Ó Drisceoil says that they believe they’ve found the chapel of John Rothe Fitzpierce who built the iconic Rothe House on Parliament Street during the 1500s.
Speaking to KCLR News this lunchtime, Cóilín says they believe they may also uncovered the body of one of Kilkenny’s most famous church men, Bishop David Rothe.
Three bodies were found underneath the chapel, one of which appears to be that of a bishop, dating from the same period as Bishop Rothe.
You can hear all about the discoveries at St Mary’s Church to date at a talk being given by Cóilín Ó Drisceoil this evening in the Spring Hill Court Hotel from 8 o’clock.
