John McGuinness is calling on Government to expand the role of the Public Accounts Committee.
The Carlow Kilkenny representative is a former Chair of the PAC and was among those to participate in yesterday’s marking of the group’s centenary.
The now Leas-Cheann Comhairle wants the Controller & Auditor General to include in the examination RTÉ, local government as well as Section 39 funding and other bodies in receipt of public funds.
The local Deputy told KCLR News; “Transparency and accountability must continue to be the central role of the Public Accounts Committee across the full range of departments and agencies that benefit from public funds”.
He adds; “As we plan for the next 100 years we must set a firm foundation based on the best practice of the past, coupled with radical reform of how the public accounts and the controller and Auditor General operates in order to respond to a world that is changing rapidly, advancing at a pace in the use of IT and artificial intelligence if we are serious about protecting the exchequer and the public funds.”
