Local councillors are the latest to express concern over a new EU law which will prevent older people from receiving help to repair or replace gas or oil heating systems.
The new regulation, which aims to reduce carbon emissions and which took effect on the first of January, has been met with criticism including from MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú who outlined her concerns on KCLR last week, calling the move ‘cruel’ and ‘petty’.
Last evening it was raised at the monthly meeting of Carlow County Council where a decision reversal was called for.
Cathaoirleach, Cllr Fergal Browne, says those at the European table need to do more, telling KCLR News; “I think we’ll have to lobby our MEPs and see can we get some guidance on it going forward because it doesn’t make sense, it’s too sudden, it’s too draconian and doesn’t take account of people’s needs in our aging population”.
