Kilkenny County Council has had to fork out an extra €17,000 for the Ferrybank Neighbourhood Park.
Close to €40,000 had been paid to a contractor to remove all construction material from the site before plans could progress. However some very deep foundations were later discovered that have be removed.
At last month’s Piltown Municipal District meeting Cllr Melissa O’Neill called for somebody to be held accountable for this. And, at their latest gathering last week, councillors were told that the foundations existence had been unknown to the local authority and to the contractor, who’s since gone out of business.
€7,000 has been incurred uncovering the buried material and a further €10,000 will be required to clear it.
However Director of Services Sean McKeon says the timescale for completion of the park has not altered to any significant extent as a result of the findings.
Tendering for the specialist works to construct it have proceeded & the tender request for the main contractor has also been published with quotations due by the end of this month.
Successful bidders should be on site in the summer months & civil works are expected to be completed by the end of August with planting to follow.
