The case of Ireland’s first Witchcraft Trial is the focus of the newest locally-based festival.
Kilkenny’s Toil or Trouble takes place at a host of venues from the 28th of October; ending on the 3rd of November which is the 700th anniversary of the burning at the stake of Petronella de Meath.
She was the first person in Ireland, and Europe, to suffer such fate but many others were to follow, most of them women.
You can learn more about her as well as Alice Kyteler, the then Bishop of Ossory Richard Ledrede and others while also considering the societal similarities between 1324 and 2024 – has anything changed or are we destined to repeats our mistakes in the week-long programme.
It was unveiled on Friday evening at St Canice’s Cathedral, close to the tomb of Bishop Ledrede and the Chapter House which is currently exhibiting his Red Book of Ossory.
