The family of a young Laois man killed in a hit and run will join students at his former university today to call for a tougher prison sentence for the man driving the car.
Joe Drennan, a journalism student at UL who was from Mountrath, died in October 2023.
Last week 21-year-old Kieran Fogarty was sentenced to six and a half years behind bars for dangerous driving, the sentence runs con-currently with a previous conviction for discharging a firearm.
Joe’s family, friends and colleagues are appealing to the Director of Public Prosecutions to review the sentence.
Lecturer and Head of Journalism at UL Catherine Hayes says; “Think people have been very touched and very upset, devastated, when he died and also devastated now again for the family who are campaigning so hard for justice, people are meeting today here in the University of Limerick at 1:30 and Joe’s parents are travelling down from Laois, Tim and Marguerite to join with the UL community and indeed people across Limerick”.
