It’s been a great pleasure with to speak with Fay Hield over the years. She has produced some fine albums both as a solo artist and as a member of the Full English, a coming together of some of England’s finest singers and musicians. This has had the effect of delaying the follow up to “Orfeo” but it has been well worth the wait.
“Old Adam”, her new album, is a fine collection of songs as you’d expect from someone who collects songs both as a singer and as an academic practitioner. This is not to say that this is a cold, objective or overly analytical selection. These are songs that are meant to be sung and carry messages that are deep in the human condition. They’re stories of the big things of life; of love, of loss, of retribution and of death. The melodies are strong and resonant and will stay with you.
As you’ll hear, Fay believes that these songs have lost none of their power as stories and this time she has also collected a fine group of musicians to bring these stories to life. Largely recorded live at the legendary Real World studios, this is a stirring collection of songs, sung and played impeccably. As a folksinger, Fay makes sure the the songs (and the stories) reign supreme.
