Stephen Ryan’s name conjures up memories of his previous bands, particularly the Stars Of Heaven and The Revenants. His last major release was in 1996 so it was with some trepidation (but tempered with experience) and hope that the news that had produced a new album of music. Those of us of a certain generation expected great things and we were – to say the least – not disappointed.
The album, “Look Away Down Collins Avenue” (itself an obscure Warren Zevon reference), is an album by The Drays and it is much more than just a solo album with contributions. It is a band album and in the interview Stephen is at pains to point this out. It features truly great vocal performances from Dez Foley and Eileen Gogan, with an outstanding production (and fine guitar) input from Conor Brady. The songs shimmer and jangle, the lyrics intrigue and reward further listening and are a tribute to all who helped make it.
We chat about the making of the album, the timing(!)) and some of the elements that make this one of the Irish albums of the year (in my humble opinion).
Check them out here and buy this album; see them live if you can (they stormed Cleere’s last week, ask anyone who was there)
