There are more complaints against Gardai in Carlow-Kilkenny than in any other division outside Dublin.
The figures are contained in the GSOC annual report for 2015.
The Garda Ombudsman got 220 complaints in Carlow KIlkenny for 2015.
That’s the highest figure recorded in any Garda Division outside Dublin and over ten percent of the total for the whole country.
GSOC says they normally expect higher stats in the busier divisions but Carlow-Kilkenny is contributing considerably more complaints per head of population than Counties Cork or Wicklow for example.
Cork city and county had nearly 260 with over three times the number of people; Wicklow with a comparable population base had only 70; and Limerick with more people had 175 – nearly fifty less.
Most of the complaints were against rank and file male Gardai.
And mostly were for abuse of authority like excessive force and exceeding authority; and for neglect of duty which range from not returning a phone call to not properly investigation allegations of serious crime.
