The fitness requirements for joining the Gardaí are set to be relaxed in an effort to attract more recruits, as too many candidates have failed the current test.
The changes will see the removal of sit-ups and push-ups from the physical assessment, and the bleep test will be less demanding than before. The adjustments aim to make the recruitment process more accessible and increase the number of individuals eligible to join the force.
A Former Detective Garda has expressed support for the decision, stating it’s a necessary move to ensure the Gardaí can attract a wider pool of candidates. “It’s important to maintain high standards, but making the process more attainable is the right step forward”.
The Gardaí hope that these changes will help address recruitment challenges and allow them to better serve communities across the country.
