Grassroots Football Clubs Raise Concerns Over FAI Calendar Season Decision

The grassroots clubs contend that the FAI vote was flawed and heavily influenced by professional football clubs

A group of grassroots football clubs from Carlow, Laois, Kilkenny, Wexford, and Wicklow has voiced concerns over the Football Association of Ireland’s (FAI) decision to implement a Calendar Season/Summer Soccer format.

The decision, made at the FAI General Assembly in December 2024, affects amateur and grassroots leagues across the country, moving them away from their traditional Season format.

At a General Meeting on February 11th in Carlow, over 200 club delegates and four local TDs gathered to discuss the implications of this change. Many clubs expressed their belief that the decision removes their ability to choose the season that best suits their league and community. The clubs are now calling on the FAI Board to reverse the decision and reinstate the right to choose for all grassroots football leagues in Ireland.

While the clubs acknowledged the professional leagues’ right to set their own calendar, concerns were raised that this decision was made without sufficient consideration for grassroots football. Some clubs worry that the shift to summer soccer could impact participation levels, particularly in rural areas where football competes with other seasonal sports.

Following discussions, those in attendance voted overwhelmingly in favor of retaining the Winter Season format. A Working Committee was also formed to engage with other clubs across Ireland and explore potential next steps.

The clubs involved have indicated they will seek dialogue with the FAI to reconsider the ruling, emphasizing the importance of local leagues having a say in their own schedules.
