Local farmers are urging road users to be considerate this silage cutting season.
It comes as drivers are increasing in numbers now that national travel restrictions have been lifted.
Jim Mulhall, Chair of Kilkenny IFA, says farmers have a backlog of work to get through now due to the recent poor weather.
And he’s asking people to be mindful of them while they go about their business, telling KCLR News “I suppose the keyword here is consideration and consideration for other road users and the big machinery it moves quite slowly unfortunately along the road so if people are caught behind it, just allow a bit of time and don’t be trying to pass out maybe on blind turns or something”.
He adds “This is a very busy time of year on farms and the recent weather and poor weather has resulted in a backlog of work on farming and there’s a lot of silage to be cut so farmers can get their silage in before the coming winter months so it is going to mean that people will be doing long hours to catch up on this bad weather that we’ve all been experiencing in fairness”.
And Mr Mulhall says that farmers too have a role to play, noting “It’s also important that the operators of the machinery are conscious of other road users too, in particular walkers and cyclists because the last thing we need is an accident or a tragedy in the area”.
