A Kilkenny man with a serious illness is threatening to go on hunger strike if St Luke’s Hospital don’t let him go home.
Gerry McDermott has been in the Intensive Care Unit of the local hospital since the 27th of January 2012 after he became a victim of a brain stem injury and now suffers from locked in syndrome.
It means he has lost the use of is body movements including speech although his brain is fully functional and working normally.
His wife Valerie says the hospital will discharge him on the 25th of March but he needs nurses and equipment which hasn’t been organised yet.
