Ceann Comhairle Verona Murphy looks set to comfortably survive today’s vote of no confidence, following a motion co-signed by several opposition parties. The motion, which will be brought during Sinn Féin’s speaking time, comes after controversy over Ms. Murphy’s handling of a speaking rights row last week.
Opposition leaders have accused Murphy of showing clear bias in favour of the Government during the issue, a claim the Ceann Comhairle has categorically denied. Despite the opposition’s attempts to challenge her position, Murphy appears to have secured enough support to remain in office.
With backing from the Government and regional independent TDs, it seems Deputy Murphy will hold on to her role as Ceann Comhairle.
Deputies Peter Chap Cleere and Catherine Callaghan expressed their views to KCLR News this morning, urging that once the vote is concluded, the focus should shift to addressing the pressing issues facing the Government.
“We hope that, after the vote, we can move forward and get back to the important business at hand,” Cleere said.
Callaghan echoed similar sentiments, emphasizing the need for all parties to collaborate on the key challenges facing the country.
