Heavy rain is affecting the roads around Carlow and Kilkenny and there’s more to come with snow and ice on the way.
There’s been multiple crashes on the M-8 motorway near Urlingford which has now been closed between Junctions 3 and 4 – that’s north- and south-bound between Urlingford and Rathdowney.
Six cars have skidded off the road due to the snow and rain.
Carlow and Kilkenny have a rainfall warning in place until 6pm this evening but a snow and ice alert is also now in effect until 8 o’clock tomorrow morning.
Divisional Roads Policing inspector for Kilkenny and Carlow Anthony Farrell says there’s a real danger of losing control of a car with excess on surface water on the roads.
Met Eireann say the heavy rain will turn to sleet and snow especially on higher ground in Leinster and Munster as well as Cavan, Monaghan, Galway and Roscommon.
Wet and slushy roads are likely to get icy in places locally then overnight as temperatures drop below freezing.
