The new Bishop of Ossory says he was nervous ahead of the meeting where he was told the Pope had chosen him for the job.
The Episcopal Ordination of Monsignor Dermot Farrell will take place at St Mary’s Cathedral on Sunday.
The Chief Ordaining Prelate will be Archbishop Diarmuid Martin assisted by the Papal Nuncio – Archbishop Jude Thaddeus Okolo.
Monsignor Farrell – who’s originally from Westmeath – was formally asked to take up the role by the Apostolic Nuncio after being asked to attend a lunch in the week before Christmas.
He’s told Sue Nunn on the Way It Is that he suspected there was something afoot:
“Well I suppose there was a certain amount of nervousness because you think that’s it, but you can’t assume that it is.
“There were a number of other dioceses that were vacant so you didn’t know even if that was the purpose of the visit so you don’t even know until he formally puts the question to you – in Latin.
“I wouldn’t have great Latin but I’d have enough to be able to understand that particular question.”
