A new rule under the Road Traffic and Roads Act 2023 will require motorists to provide their driver numbers before renewing car insurance policies.
This legal change, which takes effect by March 31st, 2025, aims to tackle the number of uninsured drivers on Carlow/Kilkenny roads.
Insurance companies will now be required to collect driver numbers and add them to the Irish Motor Insurance Database (IMID).
This will enable Gardaí to identify and catch offenders more easily. Motor Insurers Bureau of Ireland (MIBI) CEO David Fitzgerald said the new rules will significantly aid in reducing uninsured driving.
AA Ireland has urged drivers to update their details ahead of the deadline. Elena Leao of AA Ireland emphasized that many are unaware of this requirement, which could lead to difficulties in renewing insurance policies if not addressed on time.
This change applies to all car insurance policies in Ireland and includes named drivers.
The IMID, accessible to Gardaí, will be instrumental in strengthening road safety by ensuring that only insured drivers are on the road.
The AA has commended the initiative, highlighting its importance in keeping Irish roads safer.
