A public petition with nearly 600 signatures regarding the closure of Ferrymountgarrett Bridge will be handed over at Kilkenny County Hall today.
David Maher and New Ross Councillor John Dwyer are presenting the appeal to Cathaoirleach Joe Malone at 2:30pm to highlight the impact the closure is having on local communities on both sides of the River Barrow.
Organisers expressed deep disappointment that Kilkenny County Council previously declined to meet with them, stating that a petition of this scale deserves meaningful engagement and better communication from local authorities.
Mr Maher told KCLR News that locals were frustrated at being left in the dark, “What was going to happen, how this this two-month closure was going to have been in terms of like was there any other way of doing things.”
“We understand there was a report out in July 2025, which is the gut of a year ago now regarding the bridge and what works needed to be done and at that point, it would have been an ideal opportunity to meet with residents”
