Public lighting in Bagenalstown had previously been described as “the black hole of Calcutta” by local councillors, as residents in parts of the Carlow town were left in complete darkness for weeks.
The ongoing issue prompted renewed calls for action, with Councillors Daniel Pender and Andy Gladney raising concerns at numerous plenary meetings, describing the situation as “very dangerous” and calling for an immediate solution.
Speaking to KCLR News, Cllr Pender said he is delighted that the issue has now been resolved.
“It’s incredibly important that the centre of the third largest town in County Carlow is lit up at this time to prevent antisocial behaviour and to ensure that people feel safe as they go about their business in the evening.” he said.
“The fair green is a spot for a lot of people to slip through, to get from one side of the town to the other, so it’s incredibly important that it’s lit up and that we keep antisocial activity at bay.” he added.
