Tánaiste Micheal Martin’s warning that it’ll take time to change speed limits.
Cabinet’s agreed to a reduction on country roads from 80kms per hour to 60.
It’s as the issue arose at this week’s meeting of the Callan Thomastown councillors where they emphasised the need for ramps at entry and exit points of local towns and villages as well as stronger enforcement of speed laws.
Chair of Kilkenny County Council Michael Doyle says the reduction of speed limits is something local councillors will also welcome, telling KCLR; “The speed limit review has taken place by Kilkenny County Council I suppose and recommendations by the roads engineer and ourselves as public representatives and the public have recommended changes to certain speed limits in certain areas so I suppose it’s very welcome in light of the tragic incidents that have happened over the last number of weeks”.
He adds “My concern is that regardless of the speed limits anywhere I think the only thing that will really encourage people to slow down is enforcement of those speed limits, unfortunately the policing numbers across the country are just not there to police the roads to the extent that they should be”.
