SETU Awarded €1 Million to Expand Defence Forces Education Program

The South East Technological University (SETU) has been granted €1 million to expand its Defence Forces Education Pathways program.

The funding is part of a €5 million performance funding package for higher education institutions, announced by Minister for Further and Higher Education, Research, Innovation and Science, James Lawless.

David Denieffe, Vice President for Student Experience at SETU, spoke to KCLR News about the programme’s expansion. He explained that the focus would be on providing a wide range of education options for Defence Forces personnel, including courses that emphasize technical expertise in engineering as well as those that foster skills in management and leadership.

“This funding will allow SETU to offer Defence Forces personnel the opportunity to advance their education in a way that is aligned with both their professional development and the needs of modern-day defence operations,” said Denieffe.”

Fianna Fáil Minister Jennifer Murnane O’Connor has warmly welcomed the announcement: “This is a transformative investment in the lives of Defence Forces members and a testament to SETU’s leadership in creating inclusive education pathways.”

“For too long, serving personnel faced barriers to upskilling due to the demands of their service. This initiative ensures they can balance duty with personal development, enhancing both their careers and Ireland’s public sector capabilities.”

She added: “As a Carlow-Kilkenny TD, I’m particularly proud to see SETU—a cornerstone of the southeast’s education landscape—recognised nationally for its innovation. This funding will further solidify the region’s reputation for delivering solutions to national challenges, from skills shortages to social mobility.”
