A total of six drivers were arrested in Kilkenny on suspicion of driving under the influence of drink or drugs as part of a major road safety campaign over the St. Patrick’s Day bank holiday weekend.
The initiative, was carried out across Carlow and Kilkenny, with Gardaí stepping up enforcement measures throughout the holiday period.
As part of the operation, 14 vehicles were seized for multiple motoring offences, three of these in Kilkenny and two in Carlow, all for driving without insurance. Other offences included disqualified drivers, learner drivers behind the wheel without an accompanying qualified driver, and 21 fines issued for using mobile phones while driving.
Numerous speeding tickets were also handed out, and seven drivers were penalised for driving without due care and attention.
Throughout the operation, Gardaí carried out 95 checkpoints across the division and conducted 104 mandatory intoxicant test checkpoints, aiming to improve road safety and reduce the number of intoxicated drivers.
