There was some disappointment for Irish hopefuls at the Oscars on Sunday night.
Locally, Cartoon Saloon and Saoirse Ronan were in the running.
Cartoon Saloon’s The Breadwinner missed out in the Best Animated Feature category to Disney Pixar’s Coco.. Coco also went on to scoop the Oscar for Best Song.
Saoirse Ronan had been nominated for Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role for Ladybird, that award going to tipped favourite Frances McDormand for her role in Three Billboards Outside Ebbing, Missouri. The film was written by Ireland’s Martin McDonagh though he missed out on the Screenplay award to Jordan Peele’s Get Out.

This was the third nomination for both Cartoon Saloon and Saoirse Ronan respectively.
Elsewhere, Guillermo del Toro scooped Best Director while his film, The Shape Of Water, claimed the overall Best Picture Oscar. Gary Oldman won his first Oscar ever for his role in Darkest hour. War epic Dunkirk took three awards from its eight nominations.
While The Breadwinner has had its hometown premiere, it won’t see a general cinema release in Ireland until May this year. Saoirse Ronan can be seen in Ladybird in cinemas now.
