Today marks the 40th anniversary of the first use of mobile phones in Ireland

It’s forty years ago today since the first phone call was made using a mobile phone.

On this date in 1985 the then Communications Minister Jim Mitchell used the device to ring broadcaster Pat Kenny to chat about his Best Dressed Award.

It marked a move away from the landline for most and now, it’s rare for people to not have at least one such phone.

Some would say we rely on mobiles too much, others that they’re a handy tool.
