Carlow primary schools are among the most overcrowded in the country.
According to the latest INTO figures, over 90 per cent of primary pupils in the town are in classes that contain more than the EU average of 20.
More than 6,500 students in the county are in classes of 20 or more and over 1,500 are in ‘supersized’ classes of thirty or more children.
