“To the vast majority of Motorists who had things right, thank you”.
So goes a social media post from the Kilkenny Garda Roads Policing Unit after what appears to have been a busy bank holiday weekend.
The national road safety campaign draws to a close this (Tuesday) morning with three people losing their lives on Irish roads, bringing the total loss of life this year so far to 72.
More than 140 motorists were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs nationally while over 3,100 speeding offences were detected with more than 340 drivers caught using a mobile phone or not wearing a seatbelt.
In Kilkenny just yesterday (Bank Holiday Monday) alone two people were arrested for drug-driving, three vehicles were seized, one motorist’s vehicle was found to have ‘shockingly bald tyres’ while an unaccompanied learner driver was discovered with an improperly restrained small child and no NCT while heading for the motorway.
All road users are being urged to continue taking care as journeys return to normal following the long weekend.
