If you heard loud sirens going off around Kilkenny City this morning, don’t fear the local army barracks say it was part of their training for winter emergencies.

Last year parts of Kilkenny and Carlow were devastated by flooding and the army, along with other emergency services, worked tirelessly to help those affected.

For the past number of months, soldiers in James Stephens Barracks in Kilkenny have been doing extra training to prepare themselves should the same happen this year.

Speaking to KCLR News, Captain Eoin O’Brien explains what they were doing this morning:

“What we conducted today is part of our winter preparation. It was an exercise to test the readiness of our unit to respond to an incident in the south east if required. It alerted all personnel living in the Kilkenny area to return to the barracks and to prepare their equipment for an operation outside.”
