A vote by Councillors in Carlow yesterday has ruled that the Lime Kiln be added to the protected structures list in the county.

The future of the structure, on the site of the old sugar factory in the town, was uncertain up to that point – with the possibility that it could have been knocked.

In a document seen by KCLR News, Councillors were advised that the Lime Kiln should not be added to the protected structures list.

Councillors voted 9 to 6 in favour of adding the Lime Kiln to the list – with some of them now suggesting that it should be turned into a tourist attraction.

Councillor Willie Quinn voted for the structure to be protected, he says there’s a lot of heritage attached to the site.

However, this was done against legal advice which said that there was no legitimate reason for adding the lime kiln to the list and it could be open to legal challenge by the site owner.

Councillor Tommy Kinsella was one of those who voted against protecting it for this very reason.
