Kilkenny library to remain at its home on Johns Quay

Up to 5 million euro will be spent on developing a new cultural quarter in Kilkenny city.

Councillors agreed at a meeting yesterday to keep services at the existing Carnegie library which will be extended and refurbished under new plans for its future.

Around half of the money needed for the project will come in the form of a Government grant but the council will have to come up with the rest.

The new plan will tie into the Butler Gallery’s future at Evans Home to create a new cultural quarter along the Eastern bank of the River Nore.

The old Meubles site on John Street which had been earmarked as the new home for the library services will now be used as ancillary offices for Kilkenny county council as it adjoins County hall.
