Arts Show #5: May 15 2012

Five weeks down and another show in the bag – and what a show. This one was particularly jammers and rightly busy, squeezing five interviews into the hour, along with a nice selection of to keep things ticking over as well.

Up first we had Mycrofilms‘ Alan Slattery and John Morton on to talk about the progression of Vultures into the final six Irish entrants for the Digital Comedy Lab award, a prize fund for film making that could see the local company take away €50,000 at the end of the month. I’ve worked regularly with both Alan and John on a variety of projects and I’ve been privileged to have been involved in a small way on the past two seasons of Vultures, the latest of which wrapped in April. Check out the video below for a preview of what the lads are looking to achieve with their entry into beComedy / Digital Comedy Lab.

Following the escapades of Vultures and a musical interlude from Michael McGoldrick’s Morning Rory album, I had a quick chat with Peter Kelly from Tullow Youth Theatre to see what they’ve been getting up to so far this year. Not wanting to keep the group too long from their dinner (they were also off to catch Carlow Youth Theatre’s end of season show at the GBS), Peter gave us the rundown of TYT’s year to date and their plans for the new season in September. As a reminder as well, all this week on KCLR is Tullow week and John Keane, Eoin Carey and Roddie Cleere will all be broadcasting from Tullow this coming Friday.

Keeping the theatre things in check, Ramon Tikaram joined me on the line for a chat about The King and I which arrives in The Bord Gais Energy Theatre (that’ll be the one they used to call The Grand Canal Theatre) next week for the final few performances of their current tour. The man has some CV when it comes to TV, film and theatre so I was delighted to get the few minutes with him to talk about the show, his brief past working in Dublin and to find out what he’s up to next. Tickets can be booked via the Bord Gais Energy Theatre website and you can get the background to the 2011 festival run of The King and I here.

The lovely Bairbre-Ann Harkin, Butler Gallery‘s education and outreach officer dropped in for a chat about National Drawing Day, taking place this coming Saturday and gave us a run down of other events coming up at Butler Gallery including a talk with Fiona Larkin this Thursday lunchtime as well as an information coffee morning at the Parade Tower on the 24th of the month aimed at creating a new Bealtaine critics group, similar in style to that of the Red Square young critics group already running but at the other end of the age spectrum.

Finally, Mary Almond O’Brien, whos’ involved in Sing, Sing A Song in Carlow this month as part of the Bealtaine Festival (which continues to May 31) was on the phone to close out the show and give us the background to how the choir group formed for the festival is getting along. The project has similar tones to the fantastic Shelter Me From The Rain which ran at the GBS last summer and the very best of luck to them with their performances in Borris on the 20th and the GBS on the 27th of this month.

So, yeah, as you can see – loads on the show.
