Carlow’s Acting Fire Chief has made an appeal for the general public to do all they can to prevent fires from outbreaking across the county, particularly on higher ground.
Ben Woodhouse urged caution this week after presenting Carlow Municipal Councillors with his Fire Service’s 2026 Operational Plan which he has been constantly updating since the turn of the year.
The Acting Fire Chief warned about the consequences which can arise from either careless or illegal behaviour.
“Be careful about discarding cigarettes, not to light portable bomb fires or barbecues, and then also to remind land owners that we’re currently in a period where it is illegal to burn lands because can cause, as I’ve mentioned, destruction to wildlife habitats, risk to property, national telecommunications infrastructure, and also it means deployment of our firefighters and taking our firefighters out of the urban areas, whether they’re to serve to deal with the incidents as well.”
