One and two-bed houses make up around 85% of social housing demand across County Kilkenny, according to the Council’s Director of Housing Services.
Speaking to KCLR News, Ian Gardner said the picture is similar in the Castlecomer Municipal District, where one-bedroom houses make up nearly half of the demand while two-bedrooms account for 30%.
Mr Gardner said that the demand reflects changing dynamics and pointed to recent progress in reducing housing lists in Kilkenny, including developments like An Tobair in Freshford. This development provided ten social houses, as well as ten homes on the affordable housing scheme.
Speaking at the recent Castlecomer Municipal District Meeting, Gardner confirmed that 56 housing units have been earmarked the Castlecomer Municipal District over the next number of years, with the figure expected to rise. This is part of an overall target of 800 units across the county over the next four years.
Mr Gardner also warned that finding suitable serviced land remains a major challenge.
