Donal Moore, former Waterford City Archivist said the neglect and disarray in the storage of records in several locations by the HSE does not come as a surprise.
This comes after the HSE were fined €645,000 by the Data Protection Commission after rotting medical records were found amid animal droppings and rubble.
Mr. Moore has been a professional archivist for more than thirty years and said he has come across many incidents like this in the public sector and wider over the course of his career.
Donal Moore last week wrote a letter to The Irish Times, motivated by reports of the HSE being fined for malpractice in the storage of records.
He joined Brian Redmond on The KCLR Daily to reflect on the letter, reiterating that the neglect “is not an accusation, it’s a fact”.
“It really is a case of management just not making a decision”.
“Material that is no longer needed in offices is just moved willy nilly to other spaces, without any regard”.
“Most paperwork that is created does not need to be kept”.
