Bishop Ger Nash will be formally installed as the new Bishop of Ossory today, in a ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral in Kilkenny.
Almost 1,000 people are expected to gather for the ceremony at 3pm where Archbishop Dermot Farrell of Dublin will act as principal celebrant.
He will be joined by bishops, priests, and representatives from across the Diocese of Ossory, as well as members of Bishop Nash’s former Diocese of Ferns and his home Diocese of Killaloe.
Bishop Nash, who is 67, was born in County Clare and was ordained a priest for the Diocese of Killaloe in 1991 and later as Bishop of Ferns in 2021.
He has already been serving as Apostolic Administrator of Ossory since January, following the appointment of Bishop Niall Coll to the Diocese of Raphoe.
Pope Leo the Fourteenth formally appointed Bishop Nash as Bishop of Ossory in July, meaning he will now serve as bishop of both Ossory and Ferns.
The two dioceses will retain their individual identities but will share the same bishop, a move known as in persona episcopi.
It’s an important moment for the diocese, as Bishop Nash begins his ministry among its 42 parishes.
The ceremony at St Mary’s Cathedral will also be livestreamed, allowing people across the diocese and further afield to take part in the occasion.
