The Communications Minister launched Ireland’s first national post code service today.
2.2 million homes and businesses across the country will be assigned an individual 7 digit ‘Eircode’ – which they will receive in the post in the coming weeks. Some even arrived today.
35 per cent of address in the State are not unique – and the scheme has been created to address that issue.
Kilkenny and Carlow has been assigned the letter ‘R’ so the codes for most local homes and businesses will start with ‘R’ except for some in North and South Kilkenny where E and X, which are the Tipperary and Waterford codes, will apply.
The Eircode system will be optional – so homes don’t have to use their codes if they don’t want to – and it won’t eliminate any existing lines in addresses.
You can check your code on eircode.ie.
