A lecturer at Carlow College says he was left “gutted and gobsmacked” after learning the historic institution will close over the next two years.
Dr. James Heaney who has been teaching there for two decades says staff were given no warning before being told their jobs were gone at a briefing last week.
He also claims that promises to transfer workers into public education roles have not been honoured as part of the deal with South East Technological University.
Dr. Heaney says the narrative by ministers that the merger is a good news story is wrong. “I mean, the mean spiritedness of it that’s been presented as this great success story and this good news story is that the state is getting roughly, as I say, about 20 million worth of prime Carlow Town property for nothing and they can’t even look after the 87 staff that are working in the building.”
