Archaeological Excavation Underway in Grounds of Kilkenny Castle

An archaeological excavation is underway in the grounds of Kilkenny Castle.

The famous city building built by William Marshall was the most important castle in his Lordship of Leinster.

This week’s dig aims to find the location & shape of a gatehouse, a large twin-towered structure projecting into the surrounjding motte from the high curtain wall.

The OPW has yet to comment.
