Call for special recognition for Irishtown in Kilkenny

The Cathaoirleach of the county council wants bilingual signage in the area.

The Cathaoirleach of Kilkenny county council says it’s time we recognised the unique place of Irishtown “in our history and in our city.”

David Fitzgerald is calling for that part of town to be made bilingual in terms of signage and shop fronts.

In centuries gone, Irishtown would have been just outside the old city walls and it’s where a large native Irish population would have lived.

Councillor Fitzgerald told KCLR News it deserves specific recognition and is an area that has been neglected in terms of investment.
