As an increased number of people presenting with respiratory illness begins to place pressure on Hospitals in the region, people in Carlow and Kilkenny are being advised to help stop the spread of flu.
Visiting restrictions are currently in place across University Hospital Waterford, Wexford General Hospital, and St. Luke’s General Hospital Kilkenny.
People can stop the spread of flu by staying at home if sick, and if in need of care, visiting their local pharmacy, GP or family doctor, GP Out of Hours, or an injury unit for non-serious issues like fractures or burns.
Another important measure in preventing the spread of flu is to remember to wash your hands and cover your coughs and sneezes.
People in at-risk groups are urged to get the Flu Vaccine, and all those eligible for a COVID-19 booster are encouraged to receive it.
The Flu and COVID-19 vaccines can be given at the same time.
Speaking to KCLR News, Dr. Vida Hamilton, Regional Clinical Director, HSE Dublin and South East, noted that “The Flu Vaccine is the best way to protect yourself and your loved ones from flu this winter. Being vaccinated reduces risk and helps to avoid serious illness, hospitalisation and even death.”
Dr. Hamilton also said that the current cold snap “is very relevant, the hospital system is already under pressure, so if we have a large influx of people with fractures and broken bones because of slips and falls, there’s a risk that they may have delays to accessing care.”
