Carlow is one of four places in Ireland being looked at by Greenlight Pharmaceuticals as a possible place where cannabis could be cultivated.
Greenlight is an Irish company focused on researching and developing cannabinoid fomulations to fight different diseases.
Co-Director, James Linden, has confirmed to KCLR News that they are hoping to open a cultivation facility in Carlow in the not-too-distant future.
He says the county has an excellent farming and agricultural population and it has low employment.
IT Carlow is also a big draw as good numbers of horticulture and science students are qualifying from there each year.
Teagasc also has a research facility in the county.
When asked what the cost of building a facility would be, he said a small facility could be put in place for around €1 million, while the larger ones could cost anywhere up to €20 million.
Greenlight say they have assurances that the government is supportive and that Ireland could become the number one grower of cannabis in Europe, if they invest in the required cultivation infrastructure.
