A massive shortage of housing in Carlow is causing high levels of stress and even mental health difficulties according to a local Councillor.
There are 110 people living in emergency accommodation and over one thousand people on the housing list in the county but only 87 units are projected to be built in the next two years.
People Before Profit’s Adrienne Wallace says there’s an over-reliance on the private market to deliver houses.
She told KCLR News; “Carlow has two TDs now, we have a Minister, we’ve ample senators and it’s actually worse than ever in my opinion and I suppose I’m in politics long enough, I’ve seen Governments come and go and different coalitions form locally and nationally but real change genuinely comes, and the most impactful changes comes, from people being organised and just mass movement”.
Cllr Wallace adds; “That’s from water charges back to Repeal the 8th and locally here campaigning for the women’s refuge; unless we come together, organise ourselves and create that pressure on the streets I don’t think anything’s going to change”.
