Never Forget.
Those are the words of the Carlow Fire and Rescue Service as the 25th anniversary of the incident known as 9/11 to signify the date when close to 3,000 people died in terrorist attacks in America.
A number of events will take place stateside, including seven moments of silence at the World Trade Centre, where the names of all the victims will be read aloud.
For local firefighters they’re set to remember in particular their 343 FDNY colleagues whose lives were lost.
They say “Through this memorial ladder climb and the ringing of the Fire Bell, we honour their memory and ensure that their legacy of service and sacrifice will never be forgotten”:

08:46 hrs – North Tower struck. The commemorative 2,200-step memorial climb begins on the training tower of Carlow Town Station, symbolising the 110 stories of the World Trade Center ascended by firefighters and rescuers in their efforts to save lives on September 11, 2001. The Fire Bell will be rung outside Carlow Fire Station in remembrance of all those affected by the attacks.

09:03 hrs – South Tower struck. The Fire Bell will be rung outside Carlow Fire Station to mark the moment of impact and to honour the courage and commitment of the emergency responders who immediately answered the call.

09:58 hrs – South Tower collapsed. A moment of silence will be observed in memory of all those who lost their lives and in recognition of the extraordinary bravery and selfless service of the firefighters, police officers, emergency personnel, and civilians caught up in the tragedy. The Fire Bell will be rung outside Carlow Fire Station.

10:28 hrs – North Tower collapsed. The 2,200-step memorial climb concludes, honouring the courage, sacrifice, and dedication of the 343 FDNY firefighters who gave their lives in the line of duty, along with all first responders and civilians who perished on September 11, 2001. The Fire Bell will be rung outside Carlow Fire Station, marking the final moment of remembrance.
A spokesperson’s told KCLR News; “The legacy of those who served and sacrificed on September 11, 2001, lives on in every firefighter, emergency responder, and citizen who places service to others above self. May we always remember their courage, honour their sacrifice, and keep their memory alive for future generations.”
