A young Carlow girl is due to travel to Greece to represent Ireland in the Muaythai World Championships this November.
13-year-old Teagan Middleton took home a bronze medal at last years event and hopes to add to her collection at this years meet in Athens.
The decorated athlete was only recently notified that she had been selected to represent Ireland and is now in need of funding to travel to Greece with her coaches and family.
Unlike many other sports there is no state funding available to support the Irish Muaythai athletes competing internationaly.
Seán Dillon of Carlow Muaythai told The KCLR Daily about the financial strain that such competitions put on young competitors and their families and encouraged people to get involved in raising funds.
“It’s great to be recognised and to get qualifications for them and be able to qualify and being good enough to get to that level, but then again, the other side of it is getting the finance and getting it together and trying to her over, and that’s what we’re doing at the moment.”
“We’re trying to run a few local events there at the moment and get over there and get funding, as much funding as we can. It’s to try and ease the financial burden on the family and herself.”
