It’s men only at Carlow County council now.
The last remaining woman on the council, Fianna Fáil’s Anne Ahern has announced she is standing down after 13 years on the town and county council.
She was recently appointed principal of St Mary’s Academy CBS in the town and says she thought long and hard before making a decision to walk away from her role on the council.
Speaking to KCLR News she said it was not an easy decision for her:
“It was very difficult because I’m a political animal and I love politics. I’ve had a fantastic 13 years. I’m very lucky because I’ve been able to walk away from politics on my own terms and not every public representative gets the opportunity to do that.
“I have enjoyed every minute of my time and I’m so appreciative to the people of Carlow for electing me in three successive elections and indeed to all my colleagues on Carlow County Council who have been great friends over the years.”
