A local village will this evening launch its first bid to host a Darkness Into Life
The fundraiser in aid of Pieta House will see thousands of people across the world take part in a 4am walk at various venues on May 11.
Tullow, St Laurence O’Toole in Carlow & Kilkenny City are hosting points with the Rock Road in Inistioge the latest to be added to the list.
John Gilsenan’s on the organising committee there & he’s been telling KCLR News that they decided to get involved as “it’s a shared experience so I think it’s useful for to be able to provide something for local people to attend in their own village, rather than travel half an hour somewhere else”.
150 people have so far signed up for the stretch, ahead of its official launch this evening.
Mr Gilsenan says the residents have proved to be a powerful force for competitions such as the Entente Florale, and it’s certain the same pulling together will go into this event, noting “We have a good bit of experience running successful events here, we have a good mix of skills in the community & we’re very confident that people will pull together to make it a successful event.”
Aim is to kick off annual participation in the fundraiser “Even though it is being done at 4 o’clock or so in the morning we don’t think that will be any barrier and we’ve a lot of volunteers going to pulling together to make a success of it and obviously we would hope that it will become an annual thing if it goes well this time”.
Anybody looking to participate in the walk or to help in anyway with it is asked to attend the gathering at Cois Abhann community centre from 8:30pm.
