Combating wrong-way driving on motorways the focus of a meeting between Government and State agencies today

How to combat incidents of wrong-way driving on a motorway is key to a meeting today between Government officials and representatives of State agencies.

It follows a string of recent incidents on the M50, M7 and in particular the M9 – five teenagers, two of whom were from Carlow, were killed when the car they drove in the opposite direction in the early hours of Sunday, 16th August, struck another carrying four members of a family, also from Carlow – the three sisters and young boy were all seriously injured and hospitalised. (The GoFundMe for them is almost at the €800,000 mark this morning).

Roads Minister Séan Canney has convened a meeting with the RSA, TII, Gardaí and officials from the Departments of Transport and Justice.

Transport Minister Darragh O’Brien says everyone has a role to play in reducing the number of incidents of wrong way driving, saying; “The State can do so much in relation to physical infrastructure, in relation to laws; I think as well there needs to be a serious national discussion and a discussion in households on this as well where we have young people, mainly young people, you know, being engaged in this type of behaviour, and like we’ve seen tragically lives lost, severe injuries that have happened there”.
