Darren O’Neill to Captain Ireland Elites team despite hand injury

Darren O’Neill will be Ireland team captain when he travels to the European Men’s Elite Championship in Bulgaria next week.

But the Paulstown Boxer will have to overcome his anger at losing out on a medal in Baku as well as a hand injury if he wants to achieve his goals at the competition.

He’s suffering an ongoing problem with his right hand which he says will prevent him throwing any big right crosses.

And he’s still trying to get over his disappointment at losing on a split decision in the last 16 of the European Championships last month in a fight that he’s sure he should have won.

But he’s still gunning for a top six spot that will put him through to the World Elites in November.
