Drink and drug driving checkpoints carried out last year was down on the previous year

The number of checkpoints to detect drink & drug driving fell considerably in Carlow at the end of last year.

MEP Cynthia Ní Mhurchú has raised concerns over the drop in light of a surge in drug driving cases across the country including a 5% year on year increase in Carlow.

The Carlow Kildare division saw 343 fewer checkpoints in the final quarter of 2025 compared to the same period in 2024,

The locally based MEP is a member of the EU Transport Committee and says with road deaths at unprecedented levels, Garda management should be dramatically increasing the checkpoints on our roads, not decreasing them.
