A local priest is appealing to the Catholic Church to listen to what Mary McAleese had to say this week.
The former president of Ireland was speaking at a conference in Rome on International Women’s Day when she referred to the church, of which she’s a member, as being an “empire of misogyny.”
She also called for women to ordained.
Speaking to KCLR’s Saturday Show today, Carlow man, Fr Paddy Byrne says the church needs to be more inclusive:
“It’s hopefully a church that will listen to the challenging voices of our time and do something relating particularly to the church leadership.
“It must be more representative than just an ‘all males club’.
“Mary McAleese was reacting to being prohibited form giving her opinion publicly in the Vatican and I think the day of closing converstation should be over and the Church is big enough and broad enough to include everybody.”
