IT Carlow has one of the highest percentages of 1st year students availing from grants.
Over half of students starting in Institutes of Technology last year received a maintenance grant to help cover the cost of living – that’s in comparison with just 36 % of those attending the countries Universities.
Figures compiled by the Higher Education Authority appear to show that students from wealthier backgrounds fill the lion’s share of honours degree courses.
When it comes to ITs, Carlow was number 4 on the list of those with the highest number of 1st year students in receipt of grants last year at 62%.
Letterkenny Institute tops that list at 71 %.
Meanwhile non of the figures for the country’s first year University students passed the 50% mark.
This is the first time the proportion of students availing of grants has been broken down for each college.
